Know the Difference

German Roaches vs. American Roaches

These two species are both common in Orange County but they live in completely different environments, behave differently, and require completely different treatments. Misidentifying them is one of the most common โ€” and costly โ€” mistakes in DIY roach control.

๐Ÿชณ German Cockroach (Blattella germanica)

  • Small โ€” about 1/2 to 5/8 inch long
  • Light brown with two dark stripes behind the head
  • The most problematic roach species in the world
  • Lives indoors almost exclusively โ€” kitchens and bathrooms
  • Hides in warm, tight spaces: under stoves, inside appliances, behind dishwashers, inside cabinet hinges
  • Spreads primarily through infested items โ€” used appliances, cardboard boxes, grocery bags
  • Reproduces extremely fast โ€” one female can produce 300+ offspring in her lifetime
  • Nocturnal โ€” rarely seen during the day unless population is very high
  • Develops resistance to insecticides quickly โ€” treatment rotation is essential

๐Ÿชณ American Cockroach (Periplaneta americana)

  • Large โ€” 1.5 to 2 inches long, reddish-brown
  • Also called the "palmetto bug" or "water bug"
  • Despite the name, originated in Africa โ€” not America
  • Prefers warm, moist outdoor environments
  • Lives in sewers, drains, crawl spaces, and basements
  • Enters homes through drains, gaps under doors, and utility penetrations
  • Can fly โ€” especially in warm weather
  • Slower reproductive rate than German roaches
  • Easier to control than German roaches with exterior treatments
Habitat & Behavior

Where They Live & Why

๐Ÿณ German Roaches: The Kitchen Invader

German roaches are thigmotactic โ€” they need to feel tight surfaces pressing against their bodies from multiple directions. This is why they cram into the narrowest gaps: inside the motor cavity of your refrigerator, behind the circuit board of your microwave, in the hinge gaps of kitchen cabinets. They're almost never on open floors โ€” they're deep in voids and appliances where heat, moisture, and grease accumulate. A single pregnant female introduced via a delivery box or used appliance can establish a full infestation within weeks.

๐Ÿšฟ American Roaches: The Sewer Dweller

American roaches thrive in warm, humid environments with decaying organic matter โ€” sewer systems, storm drains, crawl spaces, and utility tunnels. In Southern California they're common in older neighborhoods with aging sewer infrastructure. They enter homes seeking water and warmth, particularly during hot summers and after heavy rains. Finding one or two American roaches indoors usually indicates a nearby outdoor harborage rather than an established indoor infestation.

๐ŸŒ™ Why You Only See Them at Night

Both species are strongly nocturnal and avoid light. If you're seeing roaches during the day, it's a serious warning sign โ€” it typically means the population is so large that nocturnal harborage sites are overcrowded and roaches are being pushed out into the open. Daytime sightings indicate a significant infestation that requires immediate professional treatment.

Health Risks of Cockroaches

Cockroaches are among the most significant household health hazards. Here's what they're carrying into your home:

  • Salmonella & E. coli โ€” Picked up in sewers and drains, deposited on your food prep surfaces and utensils.
  • Asthma Triggers โ€” Roach droppings, shed skins, and saliva are a leading cause of asthma attacks, especially in children. Studies show cockroach allergens are present in 63% of U.S. homes.
  • Dysentery & Gastroenteritis โ€” Cockroaches travel between sewage and food sources, depositing pathogens that cause severe gastrointestinal illness.
  • Food Contamination โ€” They defecate where they feed, leaving behind chemical signals that attract more roaches to the same location.
  • Typhoid & Cholera โ€” In higher-density situations, cockroaches are known vectors for serious infectious diseases.

Our Approach

How We Eliminate Cockroaches

Cockroach control requires more than just spraying a perimeter. Our integrated approach targets roaches where they live, breed, and feed โ€” not just where you see them.

๐Ÿ”ฆ

Thorough Inspection

We use flashlights and monitoring glue boards to locate all harborage sites โ€” behind appliances, inside cabinet hinges, under sinks, in electrical voids, and along pipe chases. We identify the species, estimate the population size, and document all activity areas before treatment begins.

๐Ÿงช

Non-Repellent Treatment & IGR

For German roaches, we use professional-grade non-repellent insecticides combined with an Insect Growth Regulator (IGR). Non-repellent products are undetectable to roaches โ€” they walk through the treated area and transfer the active ingredient back to the colony through contact. The IGR works by disrupting the roach's ability to mature and reproduce, breaking the breeding cycle and preventing eggs from developing into adults. Together, these two products eliminate the existing population and stop the next generation before it starts.

๐Ÿ’จ

Appliance & Crack and Crevice Treatment

German roaches hide in the tightest, warmest spots in your home โ€” inside appliance motors, behind dishwashers, under refrigerators, and deep in crack and crevice harborage sites. We focus treatment directly into these areas using targeted crack and crevice applications of non-repellent products and IGR, reaching roaches where they live rather than just treating open surfaces. This targeted approach gets results faster and minimizes unnecessary chemical exposure in your home.

๐Ÿ

Exterior Barrier for American Roaches

For American roaches entering from outside, we treat the exterior perimeter, entry points, and drainage areas with liquid residual treatments. We also apply bait granules in landscaped areas and along foundation perimeters where American roaches harbor outdoors before entering structures.

โš ๏ธ Why DIY Roach Products Fail

Most over-the-counter roach sprays are repellent products that scatter roaches deeper into walls and voids โ€” making the infestation harder to treat, not easier. Roach bombs (foggers) are particularly ineffective because the aerosol can't penetrate the tight harborage spaces where roaches actually live. Without an Insect Growth Regulator (IGR), even a successful knockdown of adult roaches leaves egg cases behind that will hatch and restart the infestation within weeks. Professional treatment uses the right products โ€” non-repellent insecticides and IGR โ€” applied directly into the crack and crevice harborage sites where roaches actually live, ensuring complete elimination rather than just temporary suppression.

Roaches Don't Disappear Without Treatment

A cockroach infestation will only grow over time. The sooner treatment begins, the faster and less costly the elimination. Contact Optum today for a free inspection.
